Frequently Asked Questions
Why won't my SketchUp file open?
+
It was probably saved in a newer SketchUp than yours. SketchUp 2020 and older can't open files from newer versions at all; you'll see a message that the file was created with a newer version. SketchUp 2021 and newer usually still open them, with the same notice, leaving out newer features. If your SketchUp can't open it, converting it to your version fixes that.
How do I convert a SketchUp file to a lower version?
+
Upload the .skp file at the top of this page, pick the version you have, and download the converted copy. It all happens online, so you don't need the newer SketchUp installed, and most files are ready in a few seconds.
Which SketchUp versions can I convert to?
+
Any version from SketchUp 2017 to 2025. You can upload files from any version up to SketchUp 2026, so a 2026 model can be converted down to 2020 or 2017. Versions older than 2017 aren't supported. On SketchUp 2021 or newer, try opening the file first: those versions can usually open files from newer releases.
Will my model look the same?
+
Geometry, groups, components, materials, textures, tags and dimensions are kept. Scenes, custom style settings and text labels aren't carried over yet. After each conversion we list anything that was left out.
Do I need SketchUp installed?
+
No. Everything runs on our servers. You only need a web browser on Mac, Windows or Linux.
How big can my file be?
+
Up to 100 MB, or 150 MB on the monthly plan. Got something bigger? Email us and we'll convert it for you.
What happens to my files?
+
Your upload is deleted as soon as the conversion finishes. The converted file is kept for 7 days so you can download it again, then deleted. Files are stored privately and only your account can download them.
What if a conversion fails?
+
You get your credit back automatically. If a file keeps failing, email us and we'll take a look.
Is this made by SketchUp?
+
No. SketchUpConverter.com is an independent SketchUp version converter and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Trimble. SketchUp is a trademark of Trimble Inc.
