Free SKP to IFC converter · experimental
Convert SketchUp files to IFC
Drop in a .skp and get an IFC4 file you can link into Revit, Archicad or any BIM viewer, at real size and with every group named. The file stays on your device.
Experimental: results may vary. if you have problems.
How to convert SKP to IFC
- Click Choose a .skp file above, or drag the file onto the box.
- Wait while your browser reads the model and writes the IFC.
- Click Download .ifc. In Revit, use Insert › Link IFC; in Archicad or any IFC viewer, open or merge it as an IFC file.
What you get
- One element per group or component, named as in SketchUp, so you can pick out "Kitchen island" rather than a nameless mesh.
- Real size, right way up. Metres, with Z as up, so the model lines up with a Revit project instead of arriving tiny or on its side.
- Tags as layers, plus a "SketchUp" property set on each element with its tag, component name and where it sits in the model.
- Colors from the SketchUp materials.
- Stable IDs. Converting the same file again gives the same element IDs, so a linked IFC reloads cleanly.
Hidden groups and anything on a hidden tag are left out, the same way SketchUp leaves them off screen.
What it isn't
A SketchUp model is made of faces. It doesn't know that a box is a wall or a slab, so this converter can't either: every element is a generic IFC element with mesh geometry. That's the right starting point for coordination, clash checks and modelling over, but you won't get editable Revit walls, and everything sits on one level. If you need real BIM classes, SketchUp Pro can classify groups as IFC types before its own IFC export.
How we tested it
We converted a 20 MB house model saved in SketchUp 2026 into a 25 MB IFC with 415 elements and 325,669 triangles across 4 tags. IfcOpenShell, the open-source IFC toolkit many BIM tools are built on, found no schema errors, read the geometry of all 415 elements, and measured the model at the same 29.6 × 27.3 × 8.1 m it is in SketchUp. Converting it a second time gave identical element IDs.
We haven't opened these files in every BIM app yet, which is why the tool is marked experimental. If one gives you trouble, use the Feedback button and tell us the app and version.
Other ways to get an IFC from SketchUp
- SketchUp Pro exports IFC itself (File › Export › 3D Model) and can classify groups as walls, slabs and so on first. It needs a paid subscription and a SketchUp that opens the file.
- IFC Manager is an extension for SketchUp Pro with more control over classes and properties.
- Revit's own SketchUp import (Insert › Import CAD) reads .skp files directly. If it accepts your file, it's the quickest route for a one-off reference.

SKP to IFC questions
Is this SKP to IFC converter free?
+
Yes. There's no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. The conversion runs on your own device, so there's nothing for us to charge for.
Is my SketchUp file uploaded?
+
No. Your browser reads the .skp and writes the IFC itself. We never receive the model.
Will Revit see walls, floors and doors?
+
No. SketchUp geometry is faces, not building elements, so every group and component comes through as a generic IFC element (IfcBuildingElementProxy), which Revit shows as a Generic Model. Use it as a reference to model over; the walls in it aren't editable Revit walls.
Should I link or import the IFC in Revit?
+
Link it (Insert › Link IFC). Linking keeps your Revit project light, and when the SketchUp model changes you convert it again and reload the link.
Which IFC version does it write?
+
IFC4, with geometry as triangle meshes. It's the version current Revit, Archicad and BIM viewers read best for this kind of reference geometry.
Are colors and textures included?
+
Colors are: each element keeps its SketchUp material colors. Texture images aren't, since IFC viewers and Revit don't use them for reference geometry; a textured material comes through as the texture's average color.
Why does it say experimental?
+
We've checked the files with IfcOpenShell, the open-source IFC toolkit, which validates them against the IFC4 schema and reads every element's geometry. We haven't yet tried them in every BIM app, so if one doesn't open or looks wrong, please use the Feedback button and tell us which app.
